1st Mostra Fita de Cinema: Joaçaba connects with Brazilian cinema
With productions by Rogério Sganzerla and curatorship by Cristina De Marco, the event begins on May 4.
The 1st Mostra Fita de Cinema – music in the films of Rogério Sganzerla begins on May 4 and runs until May 16. Although its local activities take place in Joaçaba, the event will gather a regional audience – students, researchers, communicators and admirers of Brazilian cinema. Workshops can be attended online, giving it a reach without borders.
The project was approved through the 2023 Santa Catarina Film Award (Prêmio Catarinense de Cinema) call, with funds from the Paulo Gustavo Law, and is curated by journalist Cristina De Marco, a scholar of the famous Joaçaba native. In addition to screening films by Rogério Sganzerla, the event will hold workshops and debates.
Rogério is an icon of Brazilian cinema. The director, writer and man of the arts whose “name” is a reference at the Casa da Cultura of his hometown is still very distant from his fellow townspeople. At 17 he was already in São Paulo exploring the world of writing, cinema and communication; even so, Sganzerla remains unknown to many and needs to be discovered by his compatriots.
It was from this perspective that journalist and event curator Cristina De Marco, who met, interviewed and exchanged information with Sganzerla, organized the showcase. “The showcase is part of an old dream. One of the most creative and respected authors of Brazilian cinema was born in Joaçaba. I was lucky enough to meet him and fall in love with his work. I would like my fellow townspeople to have the chance at least to get to know his work,” Cristina emphasized.
At the 1st Mostra Fita, the public will be able to see the filmmaker’s productions for free, take part in workshops and also unravel the films’ soundtracks. The short films Brasil (1981, 12 minutes) and Informação H.J. Koellreutter (2003, 16 minutes), the medium-length film Isto é Noel Rosa (1990, 46 minutes) and the feature film Tudo é Brasil (1998, 82 minutes) will be screened.
From these selected films it is possible to build a historical and cultural panorama of the country, passing through the melodies of Noel Rosa, Ary Barroso, Pixinguinha, Dorival Caymmi, João Gilberto, Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Maria Bethânia, flutist Hans Joachim Koellreutter and the Brazilian Symphony Orchestra (OSB). Cristina stresses: “I chose music as the theme for the showcase because it is an essential element in Sganzerla’s productions. I usually say that music works as a character in these films, and through them we can also observe the evolution of Brazilian music, especially samba.”
In the past, Sganzerla, when selecting the soundtrack for his work, was influenced by great names, national and international; today it is the filmmaker himself who influences Brazilian art. Soon, the organizers should announce the official program, the names of the panelists and the personalities who will attend the event.
