Films from Santa Catarina’s Midwest screened at the Florianópolis Cultural Marathon
Lands, Bodies and Communities: Contemporary Cinema of Santa Catarina’s Midwest
Free screening on March 22, at 8 pm, at the Gilberto Gerlach Cinema (CIC), presents a selection of regional cinema that explores the struggle for land, community resistance and questions of identity.
The Florianópolis Cultural Marathon hosts, on March 22 at 8 pm, the session “Lands, Bodies and Communities: Cinema of Santa Catarina’s Midwest”, at the Gilberto Gerlach Cinema at CIC (Av. Gov. Irineu Bornhausen, 5600, Agronômica). The event, free and rated 12+, brings four short films that offer an intimate and revealing view of the complex social, cultural and environmental realities of Santa Catarina’s Midwest.
The films explore the struggles and everyday experiences of communities dealing with issues such as rural resistance, the transformation of community relations and the search for individual identity. The program includes:
Fiado Só Amanhã (Credit Only Tomorrow, 21 min), directed by José Barancelli: A dive into the culture of informal credit, revealing the bonds of trust that sustain the grocery stores and bars of the countryside, full of humor and affectionate memories.
Terra, Vento e Água (Land, Wind and Water, 25’45”), directed by Gislaine Santos Trindade and Iara Welter dos Santos: In the land of wind, Água Doce, the Olaria, 09 de Novembro and Primeiro de Agosto settlements intertwine their stories with the very history of the MST – Landless Rural Workers’ Movement, revealing how Santa Catarina is one of the cradles of the struggle for land.
Even with the specific conditions of the region, which suffers every year from cold and frost, residents plant, harvest and supply food that is the result of sustainable farming practices, generated from the settlement land.
The communities’ conquest of basic rights, the difference between a camp and a settlement, the historical moments that connected the South with the rest of the country through the movement and the struggle for agrarian reform, are translated through archive photographs, images and sounds of people who for more than 20 years have collectively built the ideal of a dignified and fair life for a less unequal society.
Basquete das Excluídas (Basketball of the Excluded, 10’55”), directed by Rudolfo Auffinger: The story of an LGBTQIA+ group that uses basketball and vogue dance to transform public spaces and affirm its identity, challenging social norms in Curitiba.
A César o que é de César (Render Unto Caesar, 22’28”), directed by Marcos José (Mestre Biruta): An intimate drama about identity and belonging, in which an elderly farmer in rural Santa Catarina confronts social and family expectations while seeking the freedom to be who he really is.
Each film offers a unique window onto the reality of Santa Catarina’s Midwest, reflecting on themes such as the preservation of traditions, the confrontation of social norms and the resistance of the communities that make up this territory. Together, the films present a multifaceted portrait of a region rich in stories of struggle and transformation.
