Cine Raízes brings cinema and reflection to Vila Usina on a special night in Caçador

Last Saturday, December 14, at 7:30 pm, Cine Raízes held an unforgettable screening in Vila Usina, Caçador. The special program gathered around 20 people for a night that combined cinema, music, popcorn and debate, bringing the audience inspiring stories and reflections on identity, resistance and rights.

The event counted on the partnership of Pupilo, which provided the projection equipment and distributed popcorn, creating a welcoming and accessible environment for the community.

Six short films were screened, addressing relevant themes such as the environment, ancestry and overcoming adversity:

• Grão (15 min, documentary): a poetic record of the struggle of families in Mato Grosso against the impacts of agribusiness.
• Procura-se: um pato e um gato (10 min, animation): a journey of friendship and resilience on the city streets.
• Zé Maria Tava Certo (15 min, fiction): real stories inspiring powerful narratives.
• Lamparina Acesa (6 min, documentary): memory and resistance in a small community.
• Erva que Cura, Erva que Benze (9 min, documentary): the wisdom of the faith healers of Bahia’s Recôncavo.
• Salvem as Florestas (3 min, experimental): a poetic and provocative eco-performance.

Cine Raízes, conceived by artist and cultural agent Elias de Lima, was born with the purpose of democratizing access to cinema in communities far from Caçador’s only movie theater. As a traveling film club, the project will tour five peripheral neighborhoods of Caçador and Lebon Régis, offering 38 free and accessible screenings, as well as debates, workshops and training activities.

The choice of Vila Usina as the starting point reinforces Cine Raízes’ commitment to the most vulnerable communities. For more than 20 years, around 200 residents of the locality have faced challenges related to the lack of basic infrastructure, such as water and electricity. The screening was a moment of unity and reflection, highlighting the role of cinema as a tool for social transformation.

Carried out with funds from the Santa Catarina Film Award – Paulo Gustavo Law Special Edition/2023, with the support of the Santa Catarina Cultural Foundation (FCC), the Government of the State of Santa Catarina, the Ministry of Culture and the Federal Government, Cine Raízes showed that cinema can be a meeting point, resistance and hope.
