Cineclube Pupilo hosts the 13th Cinema and Human Rights Showcase

Cineclube Pupilo has the honor of hosting the prestigious 13th Cinema and Human Rights Showcase (Mostra Cinema e Direitos Humanos), taking place on April 16, 17 and 18, 2024, for students of the state education network, plus an evening session open to the public. The screenings, part of the Diffusion Showcase, are free and belong to an initiative that accredited 257 venues across Brazil to discuss and screen films that address fundamental themes related to human rights.

The Cinema and Human Rights Showcase is a production of the Department of Cinema and Video of Universidade Federal Fluminense (UFF-Niterói), with the support of the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Human Rights and Citizenship. The event takes place between December 2023 and March 2024, covering 26 state capitals and the Federal District, both in person and through a streaming platform.

With the theme “Overcoming hate, sowing horizons”, the Showcase seeks to explore the diversity of themes and the plurality of Brazilian film production, fostering debate and the dissemination of information related to human rights. In addition to screenings in the capitals, the Showcase will extend to several screening points in the interior of the states, always keeping free admission as a premise.

The first edition of the Cinema and Human Rights Showcase took place in 2006. Over these last twelve editions, much has happened in Brazil and in the world. And to contextualize this memory, we present in the video below each edition of the project, its theme, its honoree and the socio-political-economic-cultural context of each edition.

The highlight of the 13th Showcase will be the launch at Cine Arte UFF, in Niterói (RJ), with the participation of the Minister of Human Rights and Citizenship, Silvio Almeida, on December 6, at 4 pm. The event will feature a lecture by the minister, who will take stock of his first year at the head of the ministry, addressing its challenges and announcing actions in the fields of education, culture and the production of data and evidence on human rights.

The Showcase will also pay tribute to filmmaker Silvio Tendler and will include film screenings and cinema and education workshops, encompassing training for multipliers and specialization courses for more than 700 teachers. The program will run until March 2024, with free screenings in the 26 capitals and the Federal District, reinforcing the commitment to promoting peace, respect for diversity and the defense of human rights throughout the country.
