Casa da Cultura and Cineclube Pupilo present: O Xangô de Baker Street this Friday

September is underway and we invite you to think about two questions through a film: one relevant to this month, which celebrates Brazil’s Independence, and another related to the previous month, as we want to pay tribute to journalist, comedian and writer Jô Soares, whom we lost on August five (5). Teatro Alfredo Sigwalt hosts Cineclube Pupilo’s first in-person session since the pandemic, on September 23, Friday, at 7:30 pm, with the screening of O Xangô de Baker Street (The Xangô of Baker Street). The film, directed by Miguel Faria Jr., is an adaptation of Jô Soares’ best-seller of the same name, set in the Brazil of 1886. The session is free, open to the public and rated 14+.

After the screening, there will be a talk on the themes surrounding the production, with Rose Maria Makowski, teacher, entrepreneur, poet, educator for more than 25 years, with degrees in Language and Literature and Management Processes, specializations in Teacher Training, Health Teaching and Literature, and a master’s in Linguistics; and with Bruno Aranha, professor at the Federal Institute of Santa Catarina (IFC – Videira) and the Marist Network (Colégio Frei Rogério in Joaçaba), with a degree in History from USP, a PhD in History from the Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro (UNIRIO), a master’s in Latin American Integration from the Graduate Program in Latin American Integration of the University of São Paulo (PROLAM-USP); he also took part in the program of the Cooperation Service with Portuguese-speaking and Latin American Countries of the University of Porto (Portugal) and was an exchange student at the University of Buenos Aires.

The book, by Jô Soares, was published in 1995 by Companhia das Letras and tells the story of a serial-killer violinist who cuts off his victims’ ears. This, in the period of colonial Brazil. The serial murders lead French actress Sarah Bernhardt to recommend the famous British detective Sherlock Holmes and his companion Watson to solve the case. As the story takes place in Brazil, genuinely Brazilian elements contrast with others of European identity, all with humor and comedy, mixing characters from cultural and political history with fictional characters. The film, adapted from the book, was released in 2001 and features Portuguese actress Maria de Medeiros, Jô Soares, Joaquim de Almeida, Thalma de Freitas, Cláudio Marzo, Cláudia Abreu, Marco Nanini, Caco Ciocler, Letícia Sabatella and other great actors and actresses.

The film will be screened as a counterpart of the Pupilo TV – Ensinar é coisa de cinema (Teaching is a cinema thing) project, selected in the Incentivized Taxpayer Program, created in 2020 by the Municipal Administration of Joaçaba, which establishes tax incentives through funds allocated by incentivizing taxpayers; that is, the contribution to the project comes from the Urban Property Tax (IPTU), and taxpayers interested in supporting one of these innovative projects can authorize the city to allocate up to 20% of the amount paid to carry them out. In addition to the program, the project also had the partnership of Casa de Cultura Rogério Sganzerla.

Pupilo TV is a streaming platform of Brazilian short films exclusively for schools and teachers to use in classrooms. The films come with planned activities linked to the BNCC – Brazilian National Curriculum – and fit within the length of a teacher’s class. Pupilo TV’s purpose is to connect teachers and Brazilian short films to transform the classroom experience.
