Casa da Cultura Rogério Sganzerla and Pupilo TV present a Brazilian Horror Film Session with free admission
Cineclube Halloween – Night of Brazilian Terrors takes place on November 1 from 10 pm
To celebrate Halloween, an event that has stood out in our region’s cultural calendar, Cineclube Pupilo will pay tribute to independent Brazilian cinema with six (6) shorts from six (6) different states and one (1) feature film that has Zé do Caixão (Coffin Joe) as one of its directors.
From 10 pm, the film that opens the session is the production by Herval d’Oeste director André Luiz, who will attend the session presenting his short film “Olha a Bruxaria – um conto de Santa Catarina” (Look, Witchcraft – a tale from Santa Catarina; 2022, SC, 13 min). The film, which premiered this October at the 21st Florianópolis Children’s Film Festival, brings a story presented by Quinzinho, a fisherman puppet played by Marcelo Ciepielewski of Cyathus Teatro de Animação, and is an adaptation of the tale Balanço Bruxólico by author Franklin Cascaes, who wrote more than 20 narratives dedicated to Azorean legends on the island of Desterro.
“The proposal of bringing a regional film with a Santa Catarina theme to the Halloween horror session is to build a debate not only around the foreign horror tradition, but around a look at fear and terror close to us,” says Cristina de Marco, producer and one of the curators of the session, which is also signed by Keythe Tavares, Rudolfo Auffinger, Pâmela Emmerich and educator Kika Chmura, specially invited for the session.
Within this selection, the other six (6) Brazilian films that make up the session discuss horror in different aesthetics and levels of scares. While “Deserto Estrangeiro” by Davi Pretto (RS, 2020, 23 min) and “Tarântula” by Aly Muritiba and Marja Calafanje (PR, 2015, 20 min) make choices geared towards psychological suspense, raising questions about colonization and machismo, “O Desejo do Morto” (PB, 2013, 33 min) goes for bloody, disturbing horror to discuss old age. In the short directed by Ramon Porto Mota, the great Paraíba actor Fernando Teixeira, also seen in “Aquarius”, “Baixio das Bestas” and “O Nó do Diabo”, plays an elderly man whose rights are nullified in the family routine while he lives with his daughter. Facing the dilemmas of aging, he is pushed aside at home, until he rebels against the situation.
In “1996” (MG, 2019, 14 min), Minas Gerais director Rodrigo Brandão explores the VHS aesthetic through a story of students lost in the surroundings of Varginha. “The classic of UFO sightings could not be missing from a session that recovers some titles of Brazilian horror cinema; after all, there is a whole generation that never forgets spending hours looking at the sky in search of UFOs after the news on Fantástico,” says Kika Chmura, guest curator of the session.
Also part of the program is the short “Ninjas” (SP, 2010, 25 min), directed by Dennison Ramalho, which revels in violence while narrating the story of a police officer who is pursued by one of his innocent victims; this is just the beginning of a dangerous and corrupt saga this officer will be involved in until the end of the narrative. “The editing by Paulo Sacramento – who also edited ‘Amarelo Manga’ and ‘Prisioneira da Grade de Ferro’ – along with the realism of the torture effects bring to the film not only a critical view of the reality of the Brazilian police, but a technical quality that makes your mustache hairs stand on end,” says Keythe Tavares, curator and producer at Pupilo TV.
To close the program, the midnight session will screen the feature “As Fábulas Negras” (ES, 2015, 1h30), which draws on Brazilian legends such as the Saci, the Blonde in the Bathroom, the Werewolf and Iara to create bloody, gory horror. “Besides being co-directed by Zé do Caixão, yet another author who would never be left out of a Brazilian horror session, the film is also directed by Petter Baiestorf, from Palmitos, Santa Catarina, the second director from Santa Catarina in the session, with the episode ‘Pampa Feroz’ among the five (5) stories told in the film. Petter has directed more than 20 features and 25 shorts since 1995, and there are three (3) documentaries about his work,” recalls Pamela Enmerich, curator and producer at Pupilo.
The session is free and the audience should follow the age rating of each film, published in the program; the films range from all ages to 16+ as the night goes on. It’s worth coming in costume, bringing snacks and enjoying a haunted session in the garden of the Casa de Cultura. “Many criticisms appear on social media at this time of year about celebrating Halloween, suggesting it be cancelled, but Pupilo realized that talking about our anger, fears and anxieties, which are part of our reality, through fantasy and horror is also a way of not neglecting these feelings – without putting them into practice – and bringing the perspective of Brazilian and regional culture and cinema is another way of looking at our identities and their connections with Halloween,” concludes Rudolfo Auffinger, founder of Pupilo TV.
