Cineclube Pupilo screens the Grito da Madrugada Showcase online and at Oliuni Cultural at Unoesc Joaçaba
On May 10, 11 and 12, the Grito da Madrugada Showcase screens Santa Catarina productions to reflect on the state’s music production.
Conceived as part of the program of the Grito da Terra festival, the Grito da Madrugada Showcase presents 3 documentaries, 1 video poem and 18 Santa Catarina music videos. In addition to the in-person screenings, the Showcase can also be watched online, on Pupilo’s film club website.
Among the music videos, highlights include artists such as O elevador, Saliva Salina, Exclusive e os cabides, Expresso Rural, Jesus Lumma, Frabin, Renna e Gabi Benedita, Gloire Ilonde, Maria Beraldo, Modernas Ferramentas científicas de exploração, Irmão Victor, Marujo Cogumelo, Escaley MC, Pretas Yabás, Manivas and Apicultores Clandestinos.
Among the documentaries, a highlight is Sistema de Animação, a feature film by Atalaia Filmes that portrays the journey of musician Lourival José Galliani, aka “Toucinho Batera”. Shot and edited with freedom, spontaneity and a raw beauty – analogous to the way Toucinho himself plays and lives – the documentary dives into the experience of getting to know the musicality and philosophy of the eccentric drummer. The film follows Toucinho for a year through a variety of unusual situations and personal transformations. Interviews and archive material with personalities from the music scene such as Nenê Batera, Alegre Corrêa, Gringo Saggiorato, Luiz Meira, Cássio Moura, Alessandro Kramer and Guinha Ramires complement the portrait of the character with memorable stories from the drummer’s career.

Sistema de Animação weaves a reflective portrait of the philosopher and musician the duo encountered: a true improvising artist balancing with humor between art and survival in a complex condition that is not always simple to explain, the result both of the cultural situation in Brazil and of the spontaneous personality of the brilliant Toucinho.
The second feature on the program is Bolachas: história do rock catarinense (Bolachas: a history of Santa Catarina rock) from 2012 by Vinil Filmes. The documentary Bolachas traces a panorama of rock’n’roll on the Island of Santa Catarina. A film that tells the story of bands that recorded albums in our state, from vinyl, through cassettes, to the arrival of the CD.
Closing the Showcase’s documentary program, Ecos e úivos nas terras de Condá (2019), by the Chapecó-based production company Lapidaria Filmes, revisits the history of music in the western region of Santa Catarina.
In addition, the program recalls a psychedelic production by Peter Baiestorf from Palmitos, Ópio do Povo, as well as a video poem by Laguna artist Preto Lauffer.
Oliuni Cultural program
In addition to Cineclube Pupilo, Oliuni Cultural at UNOESC Joaçaba brings together an art exhibition with more than 20 university students, as well as 4 workshops, including Forró, Drawing and Samba de Gafieira; the program also features a vintage car show in the parking lot of the Sports Complex, Campus I, a book launch and a performance by the sociology course.
