Vila Cachoeirinha becomes a cinema on Black Consciousness Day, with the premiere of a film made by the children
Joaçaba (SC, Brazil) — The football pitch of Vila Cachoeirinha, in the Vila Pedrini neighbourhood, will become a stage and a cinema on Sunday, 22 November, Black Consciousness Day, a public holiday in Brazil. The second edition of Cinema na Vila comes with an invitation: the project hosts Janela Periférica, from Curitiba, and the afternoon ends with the big-screen premiere of a film made by the community’s own children. The programme starts at 3 pm, is free and open to all audiences.
A pitch that has already become a cinema
The first edition took place in March 2025, on the same pitch, and brought together around 200 residents of the Vila and the surrounding area for an afternoon of stilt walking, capoeira, dance, graffiti, rap and short films. It was produced by Pupilo in partnership with the NGO Creche Irmã Sheila, which has for years run after-school projects with the children of the Vila — dance classes, cultural workshops and even horror films made by the pupils in the O Minuto Lumière workshop, screened that afternoon.
Vila Cachoeirinha lives with problems that range from access to treated water and decent housing to prejudice against those who live there, and leisure and cultural activities rarely reach the community. For the first edition, the pitch itself, usually overgrown and full of rubbish left by outsiders, was completely cleaned to welcome the public — a sign of how much a shared space is missed. Holding the second edition on Black Consciousness Day reinforces the meaning of the project: celebrating the date in a peripheral community, taking culture precisely where it rarely arrives.
The children behind the camera
Before the celebration, on Friday and Saturday, 20 and 21 November, from 9 am to 3 pm, children from the Vila take part in the Janela Periférica Workshop, led by Priscila Pacheco and Francisco da Silveira. Created in 2013 by Priscila in Curitiba, Janela Periférica has more than ten years of work with children from peripheral neighbourhoods — today in Pinheirinho, CIC and Caximba — and has received the InFormação (ANDI/Petrobras) and Comunica Diversidade (MinC/UFRJ) awards. In the workshop, the children make an affective map of their neighbourhood and create video letters, taking charge of script, camera, sound and direction.
Priscila is a journalist, cinema specialist and cultural manager, having worked at the Cinemateca de Curitiba, the CAIXA Cultural Educational Programme and the Paraná State Department of Culture. Francisco is an art educator, holds a master’s degree in Cinema and Video Arts and is a PhD candidate in Education at UFPR. The result of the children’s work premieres on Sunday, at nightfall, on a 5 by 4 metre inflatable screen, followed by the presentation of certificates.
Sunday afternoon, act by act
3 pm — Grupo Teatral Reminiscências. The Joaçaba performing arts collective, founded in 2011 and with more than ten productions premiered, opens the celebration and is the master of ceremonies for the day: it introduces the acts and plays games and performs interventions between them.
3:40 pm — Capoeira circle with Mestre Adriano Negaça. From the Grupo Capoeira Brasil, Negaça started capoeira in 1994 and since the 2000s has taken the circle to neighbourhoods, community centres and social projects in Herval d’Oeste, Luzerna and the region, working with children, young people, older people and people with disabilities. He also led the circle at the first edition.
3:40 pm — Graffiti immersion with Risco and Lucas Dipe. Alongside the capoeira, graffiti artist Risco — whose work can be seen on the streets of Joaçaba, the region and the coast, and who teaches workshops in the Cachoeirinha Viva project — paints live with Lucas Dipe, with the children around them.
4:30 pm — Street dance class with Igor da Cruz. A dancer for about 18 years, Igor teaches dance to the children of Creche Irmã Sheila, choreographs the front committee of the Soweto Samba School and was chosen by LIESJHO as the first Carnival Prince of Joaçaba, in 2019. The class is for all ages.
5:20 pm — Mulheres de Samba. The project by Grupo TEJO and the Acadêmicos do Grande Vale Samba School, produced by Ombu, brings together girls and women of different generations in percussion training sessions and takes female leadership in the Joaçaba carnival to the stage.
7:30 pm — Premiere of the Janela Periférica Workshop film, in the open air, and presentation of certificates to the children.
