Danças do Cotidiano, by artist João Tomaz Santos, premieres in March in Joaçaba
Audiovisual project turns the gestures of work into art and will be screened at the Tela Expandida event
What happens when everyday gestures gain a new perspective? Danças do Cotidiano (Everyday Dances), a project by artist João Tomaz Santos, proposes a poetic look at the movements present in the daily work of five professionals – a street sweeper, a shoemaker, a nurse, a retired teacher and a housecleaner – turning their gestures into small choreographic cells filmed in urban spaces of Joaçaba. The video-dance will be screened on March 27, during the event “Tela Expandida: Connections Between Art and Cinema”, at Casa da Cultura Rogério Sganzerla, in Joaçaba (SC).
The initiative, which features the participation of the Rachadura Visual collective and is directed by Rudolfo Auffinger, develops from interviews and audiovisual records, which are translated into dance and re-enacted in the city’s public spaces. The street sweeper had his scene recorded on a steep street near Frei Bruno, highlighting the intensity and agility of his work. The shoemaker appears and disappears at different points on the Frei Bruno stairways, each time with a different shoe, while the retired teacher had her performance recorded on a bench in the park. The housecleaner had her movement captured with a focus on the legs, at Praça da Prefeitura, and the nurse was filmed at the entrance of the Cachoeirinha community.
The original score and sound design are by Guilherme Gregianin, while editing is handled by Igor Alegro Nazário. Production is by Ingrid Lucas, with audiovisual by Rudolfo Auffinger, graphic design by Kika Chumura and photographs by Elton Krug. The project also features audio description by Mara Rubian Kortelt, ensuring accessibility for people with visual impairments.
The screening of Danças do Cotidiano is part of the program of Tela Expandida, a free event that explores the intersection between visual arts and cinema, highlighting video art and video installation. Curator Carla Abraão, with experience at MoMA and the Guggenheim, will take part virtually to discuss the dialogues between video and installation. The cultural presentations by Flávia Pacchely and Oliver Pasetti complement the event, with an explanation of the creative process of the video installation Vem de Berço. Mediation will be led by Rudolfo Auffinger, from the Rachadura Visual collective. The event is part of the Porão project, supported by the City of Joaçaba.
Danças do Cotidiano is a project selected in public call for cultural funding no. 0006/2024/PMJ, carried out with funds from the City of Joaçaba, through the Department of Communication, Culture and Culture Office.
The premiere will be an opportunity to reflect on bodies in motion in the city and the art present in everyday gestures.
