Povos Originários is Cineclube Pupilo’s opening session on World Environment Day
Following the Stockholm Conference held on June 5, 1972, this date is celebrated as World Environment Day. Every Saturday in June, always at 2 p.m., Cineclube Pupilo screens short films on the environment theme and debates their possible approaches in the classroom — in person or remote. Our first session features three works addressing the Indigenous question in Brazil, bringing a critical and diverse view of the culture of Brazil’s many original peoples, their pain and their value. After watching the films, we had a conversation with UFPR students involved with the Freyre Project and Vinícius Commott, a film graduate of the State University of Paraná (UNESPAR). Moderation was by Victoria Hugo Von Holleben.
Co-produced by Instituto Catitu and Instituto Socioambiental, Para onde foram as andorinhas? (2015, 22 minutes), the session’s first short documentary, directed by Mari Corrêa, written by her and Paulo Junqueira, reports the Indigenous peoples’ view of climate change.
The second short documentary, Xupapoynãg (2012, 15 minutes), was produced by Pajé Filmes — directed and written by Isael Maxakali — and shows the women’s battle to expel the invading otters from their villages. The otters invade to avenge the exploitation and death of their relatives, hunted and devoured by humans.
To close the session, we screened the music video for the song Sou Maraguá (2018, 4 min), by Everaldo Ape, with images from the audiovisual workshop held with the people of this name, from the Kayauézinho and Terra Preta villages, in Amazonas. Images by Flora Suzuki and Simon Knoop.
