Cineclube Pupilo presents 3 films on environmental crimes and tragedies in the environment special
The session presents three recent environmental tragedies: an oil spill that spread along the Pará coast, a historic fire in the Amazon and the dam collapse in Brumadinho. Rudolfo Auffinger, CEO of Pupilo, moderated the debate that took place after the session, with the participation of two Pedagogy students from the Freyre Project at UFPR and Vinícius Commott, a graduate of the Cinema program at the State University of Paraná (UNESPAR). Viewers were able to ask questions and clear up their doubts, and the session can be watched on the Pupilo TV channel on YouTube.
In 2001, the oil spill from the Chilean ship Vicuña in Paranaguá in 2001 left a 30 km-long slick, killing fish, dolphins and turtles. The short film À Espera de uma Decisão (2011, 13 minutes), directed by Vinicius Ferreira, tells the story of fishermen on the Paraná coast who try to survive from fishing, their only source of income.
The second short, Amazônia 4.0 the Reset Begins (2020, 29 minutes), directed by Alan Teixeira, shows the fires in the Amazon in 2020, when blazes reached more than 15,000 hotspots. The film presents an alternative to the simple preservation of the forest and to the intensive exploitation of its natural resources. Amazônia 4.0 is grounded in research, technology and learning, valuing original and local peoples and protecting Amazon ecosystems.
The third and final short shown in the session is a production by the Association of Public Defenders of Minas Gerais (ADEP-MG), with support from the Public Defender’s Office and production by Árvore Filmes. Directed by Cristiano Trad and Nathália Marçal. Recomeço Brumadinho (2020, 31 minutes) shows stories of survivors of the tragedy who, with the support of the Public Defender’s Office, are restarting their lives safely after the collapse of the Córrego do Feijão dam, controlled by Vale S.A., in Brumadinho, in 2019, which left hundreds dead and affected the lives of thousands of people.
